The cajon produces contrasting bass notes, snare textures and higher slaps from different areas of the front playing surface. The body material and front-plate construction influence the balance between low-end weight and upper-frequency response. This gives a single seated instrument a useful range for accompanying acoustic songs, rehearsing grooves and playing percussion arrangements.

The internal snare assembly can be removed to change the basic character of the instrument. With the snare section active, lighter strokes and backbeats produce a more wire-rich response; removing it opens a more traditional cajon voice. This makes the same box useful for more than one rhythmic approach.
