Zoom H8

The Zoom H8 is a multitrack handheld recorder. Switch workflows for location recording, music sessions and podcast production using a touchscreen interface. Core features include 12-track simultaneous recording, Interchangeable microphone capsule and Colour touchscreen.

The Podcast, Music and Field apps reorganise the touchscreen around different recording tasks. The external microphone inputs and interchangeable capsule system allow the physical setup to change with the session, while the recorder can capture separate sources and a stereo mix. Its USB interface modes also make the H8 useful at a computer between location recordings.

The portable recorder combines microphone capture, recording controls and removable-media storage in a self-contained unit. It can be placed near a performance, carried for location sound or used to document an interview, with the onboard display and headphone connection providing a direct way to check the recording. The microphone arrangement determines the stereo perspective at the point of capture.

The selectable recording formats support different balances of detail, storage use and delivery requirements. Physical level controls make it possible to establish the input gain before a take, and the onboard recording functions help manage timing and playback directly at the device.

External inputs broaden the recorder’s role beyond its built-in microphones. A suitable microphone or line source can be used for close dialogue, an instrument feed or a more controlled recording arrangement. USB audio operation, where listed, also brings the recorder into a computer workflow, so one device can serve location capture and a desk-based recording setup.
